MUSICAL TALENT:

IN GERMANY
A PROBLEM
WITH TRADITION
An Interview of CLASSICAL HORIZONS with the Classical Composer and Musicologist PETER HUEBNER

“Continue,
do not practise art alone,
but penetrate its interior,
which it deserves, as only art
and science elevate man
to divinity!”
Beethoven

CLASSICAL HORIZONS: Herr Huebner, about 7 years ago – that is few years before that large-scale denigration campaign of the president of the GERMAN MUSIC COUNCIL, Prof. Dr. Müller-Heuser, and of the newsmagazine DER SPIEGEL – you wrote a letter to the rectors of the German Music Universities, which dealt with “the support of musical talent”.

“The older you get,
the more you appreciate
the gifts of nature,
as they cannot be acquired
by anything.”
Goethe
PETER HUEBNER: In my opinion, only the one gifted with musical talent by Nature can recognise his equal – that is, can recognise the musically talented.

In this respect I wanted to reach possible musical talents with this letter, in order to help and support them, as they cannot expect a support by a state university – at least not due to their talent.

AAR EDITION DEUTSCHLAND

To the
Dean of the Faculty of Music
of the University of Arts Berlin
Professor Martin Rennert
Fasanenstraße 1b

10623 Berlin-Charlottenburg

4th of October 1994

Dear Professor Rennert,

On behalf of the classical composer Peter Huebner whom we represent, we would like to approach you with the special request to kindly support him indirectly with regard to authentic new recordings, especially of the masterpieces of our classical music literature in Dynamic Space-Stereophony, but also of his own work on CD.

In order to deal with this great musical task, the composer is especially interested in the art performance of young musicians and/or singers, who are musically unspoiled, distinguishing themselves with their exceptionally great musical-human talent. For this reason, he is asking you to kindly introduce him to those musicians and/or singers who
  1. have failed and/or fail your entrance examination,
  2. have been or are being excluded from studying at your university, due to a lack of talent, as well as
  3. have failed and/ or fail your final examinations,
so that he may win these music enthusiasts for the above request.

Our international music publishing house AAR EDITION, as well as the record company ENJOY RECORDS which is connected with us will handle these new recordings and take care of internationally marketing these new recordings.

No damage will be done to your institution by fulfilling this request, as Peter Huebner will in no way affect your service with this project, and at the same time those young people who have received such a disappointing blow to their talent and their abilities will be given the opportunity to become internationally active, and successfully gain a foothold in the musical profession.

The composer would appreciate a prompt reply, which could help save many young people, who love music, from hopelessness. We would ask you to address your reply to us, as we have taken over the organisational procedures of the entire project.

You could also put up a copy of your letter on your notice-board, so that those concerned can contact us direct

Yours faithfully

Aar Edition
